Presentation Overview:

Brock Tomkins has  extensive experience in various areas of road design including but not limited to development assessment, state planning, local government maintenance, state government maintenance, preconstruction design, urban and rural locations, intersections, motorways. His experience also covers the consideration of pavement and surfacing design with regard to expansive and non-expansive subgrades.

Brock's recent responsibilities have included the assessment of over 2600km of road network for crash analysis, linemarking upgrade options, maintenance improvement options and the drafting of current papers relating to gaps in current design guidelines and legislation. Brock has 10 years experience in road design and is passionate about the production of infrastructure that is safe for motorists and vulnerable users.

This presentation will provide key insights into Brock's current career focus of road safety but also touching on all he has learned in his 10 years as a Civil Engineer. Judgement is a key component of engineering, and a large component of this presentation will touch on Engineering Judgement from the perspective of the speaker and how engineering judgement should be considered equally (if not more) important than following design guidelines. This session should provide a good refresher for those only partially active in the field as well as a learning opportunity for those earlier in their career to hear from someone with reasonable experience.
